- Rohrabacher Campaign Misleads On Debates; Ducks Challenge
- Posted August 22, 2008
Huntington Beach- Today, Debbie Cook’s Campaign Manager Kevin Thurman called for Dana Rohrabacher to set the record straight on debating Debbie Cook.
In a Friday article in the Huntington Beach Independent, Rohrabacher’s spokesperson said that Debbie Cook had refused to debate. The Cook Campaign never refused to debate with Rohrabacher and prior to Cook’s challenge had agreed to one debate on Oct. 21.
“It is not surprising that Dana Rohrabacher has chosen to bring Washington politics back home and try to mislead people about these debates,” said Kevin Thurman, Cook’s Campaign Manager. “We have never turned down a debate or forum with Congressman Rohrabacher. We ask that his campaign respond to our letter asking for three debates.”
Because the district straddles two counties, the Cook campaign has asked for three debates located across the district, two in Orange County and one in Los Angeles County. The Cook campaign also wants debates before Oct. 6, the day absentee ballots are sent out.
The Cook Campaign has yet to receive an official response from the Rohrabacher campaign. Thurman sent the certified letter asking for three debates to Rhonda Rohrabacher, the Congressman’s wife and campaign manager, early last week.
- Two National Organizations Show Support for Debbie Cook

Earlier this month, the Progressive Democrats of America announced the endorsement of Debbie Cook (CA-46). Then late last week, the California Nurses Association added Debbie Cook, as a ”Healthcare Hero,” one of six congressional candidates chosen nationwide.
Health care is one of the major issues in 2008, and single payer health care is a high priority for both groups.
“I am grateful for their support. Health care decisions need to be made by patients and their doctors, not by insurance companies,” said Debbie Cook. “Health care professionals in growing numbers are supporting single payer health care where we use a system similar to Medicare to pay bills, and focus our efforts on improving the efficiency of care, especially treatment of chronic diseases.”
- California League of Conservation Voters Endorses Debbie Cook

The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) announced today their endorsement of Debbie Cook, the Democratic nominee for Congress in the 46th Congressional District.
“We’re proud to support Debbie Cook because she has shown time and again her commitment to protecting our coastal resources,” said CLCV’s Southern California Director David Allgood. “Mayor Cook has a long record of achievement on environmental, public health and other issues important to the people of the 46th District.”
In 1989, rather than see her city’s parks and beaches destroyed by private development, Cook led a group that collected 18,000 signatures for a successful ballot measure to require voter approval in order to build in Huntington Beach public parks and beaches.
After attending law school, she joined the Bolsa Chica Land Trust legal team, winning a case that protects sensitive coastal habitat throughout California to this day. As Mayor of Huntington Beach, she led the fight to stop the Orange County Sanitation District from dumping partially-treated sewage into the ocean, resulting in cleaner water for our beach’s recreational users.
Cook’s opponent, longtime Congressman Dana Rohrabacher, ignores science to deny that climate change is man-made, favors drilling off the coast of California and has spoken against the landmark Clean Trucks Program at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles – which will slash toxic truck emissions by 50%, significantly reducing the port-related diesel pollution that leads to 2,400 premature deaths per year, according to the California Air Resources Board. He currently has a low 10 percent rating on the League of Conservation Voters’ congressional scorecard.
The California League of Conservation Voters is the non-partisan political action arm of California’s environmental movement. CLCV’s mission is to protect the environmental quality of the state by increasing public awareness of the environmental performance of all elected officials, working to elect environmentally responsible candidates, and holding them accountable to the environmental agenda once elected.
